De Kuyper have been distilling at this site on the Buitenhaven Canal in Schiedam, 6km to the west of Rotterdam, since moving here in 1910. A lane runs through the distillery, at the front separating the offices from the still rooms housed in the single-story factory building opposite.
The rich, beautiful spirit of butterscotch is made from a base of sweet pink lady apples sourced from Batlow, and infused with a homemade butterscotch syrup. In this particular flavor, there is no noticeable difference between schnapps and liqueur and brands will use the two labels interchangeably. Imported schnapps typically originate in Germany and come in two forms, fruit and herbal. Fruit-based schnapps, like brandies or eaux-de-vie, are distilled from fermented fruit such as apples, cherries, plums or pears. These are clear spirits, approximately 80 proof or higher, without added sugar.
