Introducing Ilegal Special Edition Mezcal Joven Wine, a unique and limited release crafted with passion and expertise by Ilegal Mezcal. This special edition mezcal brings together the rich tradition of mezcal-making with the world of wine, resulting in a truly exceptional and innovative spirit.

Made from 100% Espadín agave sourced from the rugged landscapes of Oaxaca, Mexico, this mezcal undergoes traditional production methods, including roasting the agaves in earthen pits and double-distillation in copper pot stills. However, what sets this special edition apart is its finishing process in wine barrels.

After distillation, this joven (young) mezcal is carefully aged in oak barrels that previously held fine wine, imparting unique flavors and complexities to the spirit. The marriage of mezcal and wine creates a harmonious fusion of flavors, with hints of fruit, spice, and oak intertwining seamlessly.

Upon pouring a glass of Ilegal Special Edition Mezcal Joven Wine, you'll be greeted by its inviting aroma and golden hue. On the palate, you'll discover a complex interplay of flavors, with notes of ripe fruit, floral undertones, and a subtle hint of earthiness from the mezcal.

This special edition mezcal is perfect for sipping neat, allowing you to savor and appreciate its nuanced flavors. It also lends itself beautifully to creative cocktails, where its unique character can shine.

Experience the best of both worlds with Ilegal Special Edition Mezcal Joven Wine – a testament to innovation and craftsmanship in the world of mezcal. Cheers to exploration and discovery.

Distillery Information

Ilegal Joven is unaged, which sets it apart from Ilegal reposado and Ilegal anejo which are aged. It has deep agave aromas, and hints of green apple, citrus and white pepper. There is a lingering heat and sweet agave feel. This Mezcal is ideal for cocktails and perfect to be sipped on its own.
These terms refer to whether or not a mezcal was aged in oak after distilling. Joven, or "young," mezcal, is clear and unaged, like an eau de vie. Reposado is "rested" in oak for more than two months but less than a year.
Each Ilegal Mezcal is certified by COMERCAM (Mexico's regulatory body for mezcal) as being produced naturally — the only ingredients in the mezcal are 100% wild espadín agave, Oaxacan sun, water and time.
John Rexer created ILEGAL in 2006, after years of working with small distillers in Oaxaca to make mezcal for his bar in Guatemala. John's goal has been to bring the finest artisanal mezcal to a global market. As already stated tequila and mezcal, as well as sisal, and bacanora (amongst others), are distilled alcoholic beverages produced from the fermentation and distillation of specific Agave species.
The company originally began in 2004 as an operation to import mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico across the border into Guatemala. By 2006, the company established a formal brand, marketing itself as "Ilegal." In 2010, the company signed a United States distribution contract.
